Brawl Ensues at High School Basketball Game in St. Cloud

(KSTP) -- A large fight took place at a Minnesota State High School basketball game in St. Cloud Friday night. 

According to the St. Cloud Police Department Assistant Chief Jeff Oxten, around 9:45 p.m. officers received a call concerning a large fight at Halenbeck Hall located in the 1000 Block of 4th Avenue South.

The venue was being used for a Minnesota State High School League basketball game between Minneapolis North and Brooklyn Center high schools. According to the release, approximately 12 officers responded to the scene. No officers were working the game or on scene prior to the incident.

Upon arrival, officers were advised the altercation occurred immediately after the game ended. St. Cloud Police received information that both players and fans were involved in the altercation. No reports of any assaults, weapons, or injuries were made to responding officers. 

Police assisted in dispersing the crowd and escorting the teams and fans to their busses and cars. No arrests were made during the incident.

Brooklyn Center Public Schools communications specialist Tara Drey released this statement Sunday morning: We are aware of an altercation that happened after the basketball game between Brooklyn Center High School and North High School. While we are still looking into the details of what occurred, we maintain high expectations of sportsmanship among our fans and players. At this point in our investigation, we don't believe any Brooklyn Center High School basketball players were involved in the incident. 

The case remains active as officers will review information from the incident. Both involved schools and the Minnesota State High School League will also be reviewing the incident.
