Six teenagers from Austin were in the car at the time of the crash, and at least two were injured, the sheriff’s office said. The 17-year-old driver was taken by ambulance to the Austin Medical Center with a swollen left eye and several other cuts. The other five passengers, one of whom had possibly suffered broken bones and had a 5-inch gash on their head, were taken to the hospital by a friend.

The driver told responders they were moving at about 60 miles per hour when a deer ran in front of them, causing him to swerve into the ditch and hit a rock pile or embankment, the sheriff’s office said. He said the truck was moving at about 20 miles per hour when they hit the rocks.

Officials said driver was the only person in the truck wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
