Vehicle Chase in Downtown Austin Leads to Drug Bust

(ABC 6 News) - An Austin man is potentially facing several charges after leading police on a vehicle and foot chase over the weekend.

According to the Austin Police Department, an officer attempted to make a traffic stop around 10:30 Saturday night after witnessing a vehicle weave over the center line.  


The officer also noticed the vehicle had a brake light that was out and expired registration.

Police said the driver failed to stop and led the officer on a 45 mile an hour chase between the 200 block of 1st Ave SE and the 800 block of 5th Ave. NE where he then exited the vehicle and took off on foot.

After a brief foot chase, the officer the officer tased 26-year-old Steven Edwards and placed him under arrest.

Austin Police Captain Dave McKichan said officers found baggies of what's believed to be cocaine and ecstasy on Edwards, inside his vehicle and along the path of the foot chase.

He's possibly facing several charges including Fleeing a Peace Officer, 5th-Degree Drugs Possession, Driving After Revocation, Obstructing the Legal Process, Operating an Unregistered vehicle, DWI; Controlled Substance, DWI; Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence, and DWI; 3rd-Degree Driving While Impaired.
