Area Veterans Honor Service with Picnic

(ABC 6 News) -- Hundreds of area veterans took part in the 13th annual "All Veterans, All Eras" picnic at the Worth County Fairgrounds Saturday, coming together to honor their service and break bread together.

The event is put on by the local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America to bring veterans and their families together.

"We do this to celebrate all branches of the armed forces and all wars," chapter 790 president Larry Paul said. "We look to bring all veterans together so they can meet and celebrate and enjoy each other."

Despite the rain, hundreds attended the event, which in previous years has drawn more than 500 veterans from Minnesota and Iowa.

Vietnam War veteran Dean Beighley has been attending the picnic for years and said he looks forward to seeing many of the same faces each year.

"We’re so spread out, you know. Some of them are quite a ways away. My friend, he’s down here from Duluth," he said.

The event, which also featured live music and prizes, is also meant to spread camaraderie, Paul said.

"We all have camaraderie with each other, and we get to see each other in a group setting [doing] what we want to do, talk about what we like to talk about as veterans, and do live entertainment, just to have a wonderful time together," he said.
