Former and Current State Lawmakers React to Sen. Franken Announcement

(ABC 6 News)—The news of Senator Al Franken resigning in the near future has left many around the country shocked, especially in Minnesota.

"If there's a vacancy for any reason there is a procedure, some steps to take. Those steps will happen," said DFL State Representative, Duane Sauke.

Sauke said now that Franken has announced his resignation there will probably be some political fighting over who will take his place.

"The Governor gets to decide. The Governor is a Democrat. Just because of human beings and the biases we have. I think it's reasonable to expect that it will be a Democrat," said Rep. Sauke.

But Republicans, like former State Lawmaker Fran Bradley, have their recommendations as well.

"On both sides, I’d sort of say take a breath," said Bradley.

He also said this is a time to come together and not give up.

"Let's not give up on the institutions, on our process, on our public servants because as I said the vast majority are really good people," said Bradley.

"To the people that were just condemning because they're Republican and they hate Al Franken because he's a Democrat, that's not a proper reaction. To the people who are defending him to the end because they're Democrats is not a proper reaction," said Bradley.

Representative Tim Walz stated on twitter, “I have served with Senator Franken for eight years in the U.S. Congress and he has accomplished a lot of good for Minnesotans." He also said, “For the good of Minnesotans and the American people, I believe Senator Franken has made the right decision in stepping aside.”

As it turns out, this is not the first time Minnesota has had to replace a Senator.

"In fact, we've done it several times in our history where we had a Senator leave for some reason or another and then we've had an appointment. Somebody else came in and served out the term, that's the process that will happen," said Rep. Sauke.

Republican State Senator Carla Nelson also weighed in on the news. She is calling on people, including Congressman Tim Walz to return any campaign contributions they received from Senator Franken.

We have yet to hear back from Walz in regards to that request.
