(ABC 6 News) - It’s not unusual for school districts to reach out to their communities and ask for donations to make their educational programs better.

But THIS request is a little bit different.

"I know a lot of our students and a lot of their families go deer hunting," said Grand Meadow science teacher Josh Bilskemper.

And that brings us to his request: "Of our students and their parents and community members, to donate deer hearts."

They’ll form the centerpiece of a hands-on biology lesson.

"I really like getting kids down and dirty with the deer heart,” teacher Josh Bilskemper said.

“It’s disgusting but at the same time it's cool,” said Grand Meadow sophomore Ethan Gilbert. “Just being able to touch that, it feels really cool."

"They're very large, they're a mammal-based heart so they're very similar to a human heart when you talk about the general structure and anatomy of it," teacher Josh Bilskemper said.

“It's a fun experience, just being able to look into it and get a visual of just what's going on inside the body" tenth grader Ethan Gilbert said.

“Just really getting to know the actual anatomy and three-dimensional aspect of it are what really make it very engaging," science and biology teacher Josh Bilskemper said.

“I like stuff that's more interactive" student Ethan Gilbert said. But not everyone does: "There are definitely some of my classmates who do gag a little bit and have to step out of the classroom."

"And sometimes the best time you can learn is when you get uncomfortable” teacher Josh Bilskemper told us. “Heck, how do you stick a knife in a book?”

And hunters, when you bag that trophy deer this season, remember that the Grand Meadow school can use the heart.

Contact the school to make your donation.
