Byron 5th Graders 'Adopt' Hurricane Harvey Victims for Community Service Project

(ABC 6 News) -- Students at Byron Intermediate School are finding ways to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Fifth graders are working on a community service project to raise money for a family near Houston, TX.   Through the end of September, they'll collect donations and buy a Target gift card for a woman named Mariah and her family.


They were renting an apartment destroyed in the storm.

"We didn't even know that we were going to be like on the news, we just did it because we knew that it was such a big thing that just even a few dollars could help like just live," Mitchell Holmen said.

So far the students have raised $700 with more on the way.
