(ABC 6 News) - The Rochester Police department calls it "OPERATION AWARE".
For the better part of three months, police have been focused on prostitution. Specifically, those "offering to hire persons (both juveniles and adults) for prostitution, people who promote/profit from prostitution and victims of prostitution."
Since the latter part of May, the Street Crimes Unit had 118 telephone numbers contact undercover officers' phones, which were posted in the escort section of www.backpage.com.
A total of 29 people were arrested. They include 11 suspects offering to hire a person 15-17 years of age for prostitution, eight suspects offering an adult for prostitution, four for promoting/profiting from prostitution and six for engaging in prostitution.
With advancing technology, Rochester Police say they will continue to focus on the issue.
"Although technology changes and they try to get ahead of us, we will be ready to react and do whatever is necessary to try to catch future people who are involved," said Lt. Mike Sadauskis.
Authorities say the Street Crimes Unit also played a key role in two federal cases involving two suspects charged with promoting juvenile females for sex trafficking.
