MANKATO, Minn. (AP) - A leading college football player at Minnesota State University Mankato last season has been charged with attempted murder in what police say was a drug-related shooting.

Twenty-five-year-old Dennis Carter, of Mankato, is charged in Scott County with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and fleeing police. Carter is in jail on $75,000 bail.

Authorities say Diaa Ahmed Abdelhakim was shot in the neck on Aug. 20 outside the Renaissance Festival grounds near Shakopee and survived his wounds.

The Free Press reports Carter was arrested by sheriff's deputies following a short chase.

Carter led the Mavericks with 964 receiving yards and nine touchdown receptions in 12 games as a senior.
