(ABC 6 News) - Authorities have arrested a man for attempting to rob a gas station in southwest Rochester last week.

The attempted robbery happened just before midnight on August 14 at the Kwik Trip, located in the 2100 block of 2nd Street SW.

Right before closing time, police say 46-year-old Albert Lurkes approached the store's counter to buy a pack of gum. But when the clerk opened the cash register, he tried to jump over the counter and grab the till.

The employee tried to fight him off and began yelling for another worker to come over. That’s when the man took off running.

Officers located Lurkes Monday near downtown Rochester. When officers approached Lurkes, he took off on foot. The pursuit ended at Silver Lake, where Lurkes jumped in the water. He was eventually apprehended.
