(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A cleanup effort is underway on the Cedar River and crews are pulling hundreds of tires from the water.

The Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa is dong the work. From Austin to the Iowa border, 431 tires have been removed in just the past week.

Since 2011, at least 1,100 tires have been taken out of the river.

Right now, the group is only collecting tires, but we're told crew members also found burning barrels, scrap metal and a pontoon boat.
