(ABC 6 News) -- Friday kicked off Dodge County's relay for life event. Like many counties, Dodge is no stranger to cancer.

The area has had a number of cases over the past few years. You may remember ABC 6 News investigated a childhood cancer cluster after a dozen children from Kasson and Mantorville became diagnosed. That's why events like the relay for life is such a special one for those in that community. We were there as these families and others walked together to put an end to cancer.

One survivor after another took the track Friday night dressed in purple. "This community comes together every year and I think stronger ever year,” said Angela Lamphere, whose son has cancer.

Dodge County has seen it too many times. Many like Corbin Lamphere, are fighting for their life at such a young age. "Corbin was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at the age of four and it's been 16 months that he's been on this journey,” said Lamphere. Trying to beat stage four cancer hasn't been an easy journey. "In the beginning it felt like a nightmare, it still does, it's hard we live pretty much day to day,” she said.

But this year is better than the last for Corbin, while he's not in remission yet, there's minimal cancer left.

"Every year we see everybody and it's big hugs and happy to see them and see that they're doing well. This is just really a community that comes together,” said Shelley Koen, Organizer of the Dodge County Relay for Life.

Before the relay even started, Dodge County had raised over $106,000.

That kind of support is why families like the Lampheres keep on walking and never lose hope. "Every challenge he had to face he fights it,” said Lamphere.

All of the money raised at the relay goes to cancer research. In case you weren't able to support someone, donations can be made year round.

ABC 6 is a proud sponsor of the Dodge County Relay For Life with anchor Betsy Singer hosting the event.
