(ABC 6 News) - This newly released video, obtained by the Des Moines Register, shows the final moments of a man's life... as he's tased more than a dozen times by North Iowa Sheriff's Deputies.
The Des Moines Register Newspaper received the video after filing a lawsuit against the state of Iowa, and ABC 6 News was granted access to it. But first the warning... the video is disturbing.
It's a 3 and a half minutes long, and in it, you can hear 39-year-old Michael Zubrod moan as Worth County Deputies, according to the paper, fire 2 tasers at least 15 different times. Zubrod ends up on his back and either couldn't or wouldn't roll over as instructed. Minutes after the video ends... records show Zubrod became unresponsive with no heartbeat and died a short time after he was taken into custody.
Deputies had responded to the home in September of 2013, where they say Zubrod was found attacking his girlfriend, Ronda Schukei, with a hammer and scissors. She survived, but suffered serious injuries. She told the Mason City Globe Gazette that it was the first time Zubrod had been violent in their 8 year relationship. She blamed his behavior on his schizophrenia and drug use.
The Iowa Medical Examiner's office determined Zubrod was high on meth at the time and died because of problems with his heart.
His death was classified as a homicide, which means he died at the hands of someone else, but not necessarily as the result of any wrong doing.
The deputies involved were cleared in this case.
