(ABC 6 News) -- When men and women escape an abusive relationship they often need a safe place to go.  The Women's Shelter, Inc. in Rochester was recognized today for being one of the best at ensuring their safety.

The shelter was one of nine given an award by Secretary of State Mark Ritchie at a ceremony today.  It was for their work as part of Minnesota's Safe at Home program.

The program gives victims a substitute address and confidential mail-forwarding system.

"We were very happy and felt very honored," Asst. Director Melissa Psomas said.  "Sean Jenson is our advocate and assistant and she just does amazing work. She's advocating for women constantly and always uses safe at home as a potential tool if it keeps someone safe."

Since the program began seven years ago more than 3,000 people have been helped.
