DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Des Moines man is awaiting a federal judge's ruling to determine whether he can preach at the Iowa State Fair this year without getting into trouble.
The Des Moines Register reports Jason Powell wants a judge to order fair officials to allow him to exercise his free speech rights at this year's fair which starts Aug. 7.
Powell was kicked off the fairgrounds last year after twice holding a sign and delivering his evangelistic message.
Arguments were held Thursday on his federal lawsuit challenging his exclusion from the fairgrounds.
Fair officials say they have the right to enforce safety rules prohibiting a sign like Powell was carrying on a metal pole. They say people had to walk around him into the street presenting a safety hazard.
