(ABC 6 News) - Winona State University officials have confirmed that one of the school's football players passed away yesterday while working out with some of his teammates at Maxwell Field.
WSU says 22-year-old Shawn Afryl, from Skokie, Illinois, was a recent transfer student. He joined WSU this summer and enrolled as a Social Studies - Teaching major.
“In the time Shawn was on campus, he showed a lot of people what a great fit he was going to be not only for our football program but for our campus as well,” said Head Football Coach Tom Sawyer. “He did an excellent job as a counselor during our team camps, and his leadership qualities and maturity were a valuable asset to our successful camps. He will be sorely missed.”
According to the Chicago Tribune, Afryl was a former offensive lineman fromt he University of Illinois. The paper says his former high school coach claims Afryl died of cardiac arrest.
The paper says funeral plans were being arranged Tuesday afternoon, but the family was struggling to find money to bring Afryl's body home to Skokie. The paper says his mother Sue has posted a request for donations at gofundme.com. You can visit Afryl's page by clicking here.
