(ABC 6 News) --The city council in Austin was busy at work tackling funding issues for the city's Vision 2020 project.

The Austin Artworks Center started renovations earlier this year, and in Monday's work session the council gave preliminary approval for $10,000 in funding for the new center.

Officials say it's one of the first times ever that the city council has budgeted specifically for arts funding, and they say it could have big benefits.

"Statistics have shown that it's a great economic driver, that where artists live and work other businesses follow and money is added to the economy," Laura Helle with Vision2020 said.

The Austin Artworks Center is scheduled to have its grand opening August 21st just ahead of the Austin Artworks Festival.
