Second District Court Judge Gregg Rosenbladt has granted a delay in the murder trial of Thomas George Barlas jr.

The trial was scheduled to start Monday morning, July 21st in Mason City. The next trial date is still to be determined.

Barlas is accused of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his father one year ago today on July 18, 2013.

Attorneys for Barlas filed a notice of their intent to rely on an insanity defense during court proceedings last December.

In addition, the defense is asking to forego a jury trial in favor of a bench trial with Rosenbladt to decide the verdict. No decision has been made yet on that motion.
