(ABC 6 News) -- Whether you're a farmer, or just a home gardener, a local non-profit is asking for your extra vegetables to help feed people in need.

Many people don't realize the Salvation Army will accept your extra produce donation to help increase healthy options for people using its food shelves.

"Sometimes its so hard for some of the people who we serve to be able go to the store to buy it, so if we could have it available when they are picking up their food shelf order, it's something a little bit better that doesn't have all the preservatives in it, it's really nice to have," Lori Espe with the Austin Salvation Army said.

It's not just fresh veggies they need.  The Salvation Army could use donations of any kind.  Many food shelves are seeing a spike in need this summer.  In Austin, they helped nearly 450 families in June alone.
