(ABC 6 News) -- Gabriel Jarrod is only 11-years-old, but he's dedicated to making Hayfield a better place.

He won a regional $1,000 scholarship from the Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program. He was chosen from among 37,000 nominees nationwide.  Winners are selected based on initiative, leadership, generosity and project benefits and outcome.

Gabriel is raising $20,000 to purchase new playground equipment for two parks in Hayfield.

He says he has been mowing lawns, selling water at parades and collecting donations for the past year.  So far raising $4,000.

"I want the kids to be happy, we need bigger swings, the accelerator might be new and fun, and i want to put a merry-go-round in the other playground because I like merry-go-rounds," Gabriel said.

His family says they hope Gabriel's efforts can inspire others to make their communities better.
