(ABC 6 News) -- The community of Byron gathered to support our heroes this evening.

We were there as hundreds of flags were set up in honor of those who put their lives on the line for our freedom.

It was a night of remembrance, a night to honor those who sacrificed everything, and for Vietnam Vet William Glassmaker Sr., the Field of Flag presentation is a symbol of freedom.

"To me it's pride, of all the community, American Legion and so forth, all gets together and honors the veterans past, present and future,” said Bill Glassmaker Sr., who spent 20 plus years in the Air Force. "It's a beautiful sight to see,” he said.

One by one the flags were posted for each solider, in memory of those passed and in honor of those still with us today.

"I’m very proud of him, it meant a lot to him and it means a lot to our family,” said Bill Glassmaker Jr.

"We have veterans from as far back as WWI to Iraq and currently Afghanistan too and it's just a nice way to honor the community members,” said organizer, Kim McPhee with Support of Soldiers.

Now close to 300 flags stand in rows, eight feet high, in northwest Byron.

"It makes us veterans feel good. It's just a beautiful field of red white and blue,” said Glassmaker Sr.
