(ABC 6 News) -- Mayo Clinic in Rochester earns the top spot on a prestigious list of the nation's top hospitals.
U.S. News and World Report ranked Mayo Clinic number one on its yearly list of the nation's best hospitals. It's a position they've never held before, but one many in Rochester think is long overdue.
"I think Mayo Clinic has been a great part of our community, I think that they've done a lot for our family personally,” said Robin Arnold of Rochester.
"Oh, awesome. They know everything and if they don't know it they know where to get it,” said Peg Lesmann, who traveled to Mayo from North Dakota.
"It's very well organized and run, everyone has been very friendly,” said Wayne Davis.
"I’ve never seen anything go like clockwork, it's perfect," said Mary Bailey, patient at Mayo Clinic.
For most, Mayo is number one in their book of health care providers, “In my mind, they're the best,” said Arnold.
So hearing U.S. News and World Report gave the hospital the highest ranking in the nation wasn't a surprise. The national rating agencies rank health care based on reputation, services, volumes and outcome of care.
Mayo Clinic earned more number one rankings than any other provider, ranking in the top two spots in 11 of the 12 specialties. Among their number one specialty rankings are Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gynecology, Ear, Nose and Throat and Neurology and Neurosurgery.
"The fact that we're recognized for providing outstanding care in the community of outstanding health care organizations around the country, we're just very proud of that and I have to say, I think there's a little bit of a spring in our step today,” said Dr. John Noseworthy, Mayo Clinic CEO.
Dr. Noseworthy says this ranking will bring more patients to Rochester in the future. “The Destination Medical Center is to continue to strengthen and grow Mayo Clinic's reputation and our resources to provide that great care for people all over the world,” said Noseworthy.
He credits the recognition to Mayo employees as well as the nurturing environment Rochester is creating for patients. "It's a great time to be at Mayo Clinic, it's a great time to be here in Rochester and in Minnesota, we have a very very bright future ahead of us,” said Noseworthy.
Governor Mark Dayton released a statement today saying, “These rankings reaffirm what millions of patients and doctors around the world already know: Mayo Clinic offers the best medical care in the world. Thanks to the wise investment made by our State Legislature in the development of a Destination Medical Center, I am confident Mayo will continue its tradition of excellence into the future. Congratulations, Mayo!”
