(ABC 6 News) -- Current Iowa State University men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg had successful surgery related to his pacemaker Tuesday morning at Mayo Clinic.
Hoiberg's wife tweeted "Surgery went well and @ISUMayor32 is RECHARGED!"
Hoiberg told ESPN the device started to act up over the weekend.
"My pacemaker wasn't elevating my heart rate at all and felt very off," Hoiberg texted. "Worked out with my wife this morning and my heart rate wouldn't elevate over 65."
Hoiberg, a standout for ISU as a player, then later with the Minnesota Timberwolves, learned he had an aortic root aneurysm. He had open heart surgery that immediately forced him into retirement from the NBA.
"The Mayor" as he's known, told our ABC affiliate KCRG, his appointment at Mayo was set for 5:30am and be prepped for surgery shortly thereafter.
”While I’m in recovery, I’ll just make sure to take it slow and hopefully I’ll be back on my feet soon,” Hoiberg said.
