(ABC 6 News) -- A Wabasha County Deputy is recovering after being hit and a man is in jail tonight. Just before three this morning, the deputy was on foot patrol when he attempted to stop a driver, he believed, may have been drunk.
“This vehicle came up by the deputy, deputy wanted him to stop he flashed the light in the window because he looked like he was impaired and tried to get him to stop,” said Wabasha County Sheriff Rodney Bartsh.
From there, the driver took off. He then hit the deputy, throwing him to the ground. It all happened just past the intersection of 1st Street SW and County Road 2 in Elgin.
The man driving, and a passenger, was found in Lake City early this morning. He is now at the Wabasha County Jail with charges of fleeing and 4th degree assault on a peace officer. Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
The Wabasha County Sheriff said the incident was a close call, but it could have been much worse.
“As a deputy, and other officers in law enforcement, they never know when they’re time may come. When something serious may happen. We got very lucky here and just very thankful that we didn’t get hurt more than we did,” said Bartsh.
The deputy was taken to St. Marys Hospital by Elgin ambulance. He is now at home recovering from a sore shoulder and lacerations.
