(ABC 6 News) - An 19-year-old Austin man faces charges after leading police in a high speed chase in a taxi around 2:30 Sunday morning.

Police say an officer tried to stop a mini-van driving with its lights off, but the driver took off at a high rate of speed. Authorities say the Dodge Caravan was lettered for A-B Taxi of Austin.

The driver reached speeds of 90 miles an hour while northbound on 14th Street Northwest, but failed to negotiate a curve in front of the Applebee’s restaurant and blew out both driver’s side tires when he slammed into the median.

But Police Chief Brian Krueger says the 19-year-old kept going on two flat tires, driving east-bound in the west-bound lanes of 18th Avenue Northwest. He says the driver finally pulled to a stop at the bottom of the entrance ramp to I-90 at 4th Street Northwest and, after a brief scuffle with officers, was handcuffed and placed under arrest.

Investigators say the taxi belonged to the teenager’s grandfather, who declined to press charges for using the taxi without permission. The 19-year-old was NOT a driver for A-B Taxi.

The teen was taken to the Mower County jail to await charges that could include fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, and driving without a Minnesota driver’s license.
