WINONA, Minn. (AP) - The Diocese of Winona says the reason it's still paying a monthly pension to a defrocked pedophile priest is because it's legally obligated to do so, even though he committed "horrific crimes" against children.
Thomas Adamson acknowledged in a legal deposition that he sexually abused 12 teens as he was moved from one parish to another from the 1960s to the mid-1980s. He's been laicized but he continues to receive a monthly pension of about $1,650 from the diocese.
The diocese is now responding, a week after the revelations were made public by a law firm suing the diocese.
The diocese says Adamson's benefits are required by law, not voluntary. It says the payments shouldn't be viewed as the diocese condoning his behavior.
