(ABC 6 News) - Chief Charlie Matzke, of the Lewiston Fire Department, says he's glad someone heard an elderly farmer yelling for help this morning.

Matzke says the 80-year-old farmer became trapped in one of his grain bins sometime this morning. He's not sure how long he was there, but the fire department got the initial call at 11:15 Thursday morning. They weren't able to get him out of the bin until 2pm.

Matzke, who was in the bin with the victim for much of the ordeal, says the farmer's legs were pinned and that at one point the farmer was literally pushing corn away from his mouth so he could breath.

Luckily enough, Lewiston Feed & Produce along with Benson's Farm Service donated grain bin rescue equipment to the Lewiston Fire Department last fall. Firefighters used that equipment to get the farmer out of the grain bin.

They also got some help, thanks to several shop vacs, and other local farmers who brought in a large vacuum used to take grain out of the bins.
