Researchers to Install Speakers to Stop Asian Carp

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - University of Minnesota researchers are moving ahead with placing speakers at a lock on the Mississippi River near Genoa, Wisconsin, even though a federal agency has backed off its statement that Asian carp eggs had been found nearby.

The U.S. Geological Survey last month said it was wrong when it reported in March that fish eggs collected from Pool 9 of the Mississippi were likely from invasive Asian carp. The agency says a genetic analysis shows the eggs are likely from a native species in the carp family.

Researcher Peter Sorensen says they'll install the speakers anyway. The speakers transmit sounds that repel Asian carp. He says they're still needed because isolated Asian carp have been found as far north as the St. Croix River.
