DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Polls have closed in an Iowa primary election in which voters decided a number of key races, including a crowded contest among candidates seeking the Republican nomination to replace longtime Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin.
Five Republicans competed on Tuesday's ballot for the U.S. Senate seat, which is open due to Harkin's retirement. The winner will face Democratic U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley in the November general election.
Braley's decision not to seek his 1st District seat and Republican Rep. Tom Latham's retirement in the 3rd District also have drawn plenty of candidates for those open positions.
Gov. Terry Branstad, who is seeking a sixth term, is expected to win against his primary election opponent, anti-abortion activist Tom Hoefling. The winner will face Democratic state Sen. Jack Hatch.
