(ABC 6 News) -- Three scholarships were given out today to honor a local fallen soldier.

Lance Corporal Curtis Swenson was killed by an IED in Afghanistan in 2010. Today, $1,000 scholarships in his name were each given to three seniors in Rochester. The recipients wrote an essay on how a family member's service has affected their lives.

“We just want Curt's name to be remembered as well as the families that were behind their soldier, their Marine when they were serving, it's a family effort. It's been a great way to help out, Curtis wanted to go to college when he got out and we thought maybe we could help some of these younger kids do that,” said Cutis’ Parents, Dave and Kay Swenson.

Scholarship funds come from a memorial golf benefit in Swenson’s name. This year's golf benefit is this Saturday.
