(ABC 6 News) -- Every year, on Memorial Day, the Grand Meadow American Legion honors those who have made sacrifices by protecting American freedoms. "We honor veterans that have paid the ultimate sacrifice as well as those who were in the service and came home," said Commander Einar Myhre.
Along with remembering veterans, the Legion honors family members. "Their families all played a big part. It's a sacrifice for the families as well," said Myhre.
In total, the legion visited thirteen local cemeteries to provide traditional memorial day ceremonies. The color guard services were open to the public. Members of the community came together to honor those who gave their lives in war.
"People fought for our freedom, people still continue to fight for our freedom. People died for our freedom so it's right to give them a day," said Isaac Tangen, a high school student at Grand Meadow.
"It's important for them to know what happened and that we are honoring veterans that paid the price," said Myhre.
