(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The future of electrical power for the Rochester area is here.
On Thursday, the first of two high-voltage transmission lines for the Rochester portion of the CapX2020 line was energized.
The 161 kV line spans from the new North Rochester substation to RPU’s Northern Hills substation. Another 161 kV line is scheduled to go in-service to the east of Rochester in 2015.
The project, while controversial in some communities along the transmission line's route, is the largest of its kind Minnesota has undertaken in 30 years.
The remainder of the local project is expected to be complete in the next 18 months.
