DETROIT (AP) - The government says there's no need to tell owners of GM's recalled small cars that they have to stop driving them.

Democratic Sens. Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut had asked for such an order.

But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it's not necessary.

General Motors is recalling 2.6 million small cars worldwide to replace ignition switches that suddenly can slip out of the run position and shut off the engine.
