(ABC 6 News) - It's another form of discrimination and on Tuesday, community members gathered to sign a pledge to stop the use of the R-word.
Shirts reading "Disable the Label" and "The R-Word Hurts" were worn in support of those with disabilities. The movement was part of the Fill the Heart event at John Marshall High School.
"We've come a long ways. There's still work to be done, but I think it's wonderful that some people don't even know what the R word is," says Tena Green of the Arc of Southeastern Minnesota. "I mean my boys for example my oldest is 10 and the 8-year-old and 5-year-old and I'm like we're going tonight to support the R word and they're like... what's the R word?"
The R-word is the derogatory use of the term retarded. Organizers hope events like this help those with disabilities live full and valued lives in their communities.
