Austin Teen's Song Captures the World's Attention

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Some are calling her the next Adele. And when you hear her sing, you easily understand why. Now the music of an Austin High School senior is capturing the world's attention.

It has only been two years since 18-year-old Molly Kestner learned to play the piano. She's self taught, and writes her own songs including "His Daughter."

Molly says, "The song basically follows the story of a girl who grew up in an abusive home. Her dad is abusive to her mom, and that is kind of where it starts. You start with her as a six- year-old."

Molly posted video of the song on her Facebook page Easter Sunday, and since then, it has exploded online.

"I started getting friend requests literally like ten every single second. I asked my mom what to do. I didn't want to turn these people down. They say they want to listen to my music," Molly explains.

On YouTube, the song has been viewed more than one million times. Molly has been contacted from people around the world, including everyone from soldiers to teachers.

"She came out of her classroom and had just listed to the song. A girl came out of the bathroom crying. She had just taken a pregnancy test and was pregnant. The teacher told her you need to listen to this song. She told me you might have just altered the course of that girl's life through your song," says Molly.

To Molly, making an impact is what matters most. Her goal isn't to be famous, but to create music people can connect with.

Molly says, "I feel like I wouldn't be fulfilling my passion and my purpose if I wasn't writing songs that make people think or inspire people or at least lift them up and feel like someone understands what they're going through right now."

Molly graduates from Austin High in just a few weeks. She then plans to go to college in the Twin Cities.

As for a music career, she says she's open to any opportunities. Just this week she was asked to sing the national anthem at Monday's Minnesota Lynx basketball game.
