(ABC 6 News) -- A small community in Iowa is getting its guardian dog back. Mitchell County's K-9 dog Winnie is back on the job after being injured in late March.
Winnie and authorities were at a domestic assault case when she was injured. Officials did not disclose how she got hurt. She hurt her back left foot and was out for almost a month.
Many locals noticed her disappearance. Winnie is the area's first K-9 cop dog. According to Deputy Gregg Halbach, "People reached out to our department in letters, people called in our department or visit people I meet on the street. They constantly want to know what her update is and how she's doing."
Winnie is around nine years old and she is retiring next and will be replaced by a new K-9 dog.
