(ABC 6 News) --  Mayo Clinic and local law enforcement played a big role in today's "Drug Take-Back Day".

More than six hundred cars came by the Gonda Building to drop-off medications.

Rochester Police say they collected around 2,500 pounds of prescription drugs that were boxed up and sent out to be destroyed. That's five hundred more pounds compared to last year.

According to Lt. Tom Kaase of the Rochester Police Department, the public is more aware now about the ease and accessibility of this drug take-back program.

It's all in an effort to keep both people and environment safe. Rochester Police also say the effort does not stop today. There's also a permanent drug take back box at the detention center.

More than 2,500 lbs. of prescription drugs were dropped today.
