(ABC 6 News) -- A BB gun was found at the Olmsted County Government Center, ironically, the day it was voted to up security there.
At around 9:00pm Tuesday night, a janitor found the gun in a garbage can on the first floor of the government center near the window where passports are issued. The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office reports the gun was loaded with BB pellets. They are currently investigating how it got there but say they are not sure if any charges are possible in this situation.
Also on Tuesday, the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to install weapon screening, a security measure they say will be the first in south east Minnesota court houses.
Soon, anybody going above the first floor of the government center will have to go through metal detectors at security check points. The $5.6 million project will include the installation of two new elevators at the front of the building. In order to get to upper levels, people will use specific elevators or stairways and walk through a weapon screening. That project however, won't be completed until the end of 2015, at the earliest.
