(ABC 6 News) -- A candidate for Olmsted County Sheriff makes a strong statement about his boss, the man whose job he's trying to take over.

The election is still months away, but a recent newspaper interview is catching attention. Captain Kevin Torgerson is running against current Olmsted County Sheriff Dave Mueller. We talked with both about that interview and the upcoming election.

The race for the Olmsted County Sheriff recently took a surprising turn. The challenger Captain Kevin Torgerson, who currently works for the Sheriff is quoted in the Byron Review Newspaper saying "I wouldn't run against a Sheriff that I respected or felt that they were doing their job right.”

Thursday I sat down with Torgerson, to see if he stands by what he said. "I think I offer a lot more than we currently are seeing,” said Captain Kevin Torgerson, Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office.

Still Torgerson says his remark in the newspaper wasn't intended in the same sense that it reads.

"Do you respect the sheriff? Oh yeah, oh definitely yes, yes yes yes. There's no question that you respect him, you respect the position,” said Torgerson.

As for what his boss Sheriff Dave Mueller had to say after seeing the comment, "I'm disappointed that maybe the statements were made in the article, but I also know this is a job that I enjoy very much and I know that other people would like an opportunity to potentially do this job,” said Olmsted County Sheriff Dave Mueller. "I'm not going to participate in throwing dirt at a member of my staff,” he said.

Despite the recent controversy, both wanted to turn the conversation to the real reason they're running.

"This is where I grew up, I’m proud of our home and the people that live here. So I want to make sure that this is a great community and stays that way,” said Mueller.

"Being a part of every aspect of our office, I really understand where we are, where we have been and where we need to go,” said Torgerson.

We learned just a short time ago former Olmsted County Chief Deputy Mark Darnell, who recently retired, is endorsing Captain Torgerson. Candidates will file official paperwork and start campaigning in May with the election in November.
