(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's an incident that sent a young man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. But for investigators many of the key questions still don't have answers.

"Officers responded to the Austin Medical Center where it was reported that an individual was brought in by a private party for a suspected gunshot wound," Austin police lieutenant John Mueller explained.

Police got the call at about noon on Monday.

"And officers and detectives responded to a scene in the 800 block of 9th avenue southwest in Austin where this alleged incident occurred," Mueller said.

Police haven't released the name of the man who was injured, but a friend tells us he is 22-year-old Gilo Gilo of Austin. Investigators say he suffered a single gunshot wound to the face. He was airlifted to Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, but there's no word on his condition.

"Detectives have conducted several interviews of people ... these people are all known to each other," lieutenant John Mueller explained.

While police were at the scene of the shooting, they got a call to a convenience store on Oakland Place southeast, on the other side of the city.

"There was a person that detectives wanted to speak with that had been seen in that vehicle originally at the hospital location. That vehicle left before officers could make contact with the person," lieutenant Mueller said.

Police tell us no one is in custody for the shooting, and no weapon has been found.

"It's all under investigation as to what, is it an accident, what type of an incident it is, that's being determined through those interviews and any evidence."
