(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Rochester's Mayor Ardell Brede made an unusual trip around town Monday. He visited the homes of seniors to bring them a hot meal.
It's the annual Mayors for Meals day, where mayors across the country personally deliver meals to seniors. This is part of the Meals on Wheels program, a year-long service in which volunteers bring meals to seniors who are unable to prepare or get their own supper. Many seniors can be very elderly or have a disability. Mayor Brede signed a proclamation to kick off the the event.
"It's essential for everyone to get a hot meal," he said.
The Meals on Wheels Association of America organized the Mayors for Meals Day. Mayor Brede has been participating annually for a number of years, but this is the first time that Brede traveled alone.
"We have a big list here, I guess it's nine people at eight different locations," Brede said, as he drove cautiously around the downtown area in Rochester.
The Mayors for Meal event will repeat itself on Friday in Rochester as part of the "Week of Champions." It will last from March 17th through the 21st.
