(ABC 6 News) -- Thursday marks 30 years since the first handheld cell phone went on sale to consumers.
When Motorola released the first cell phone back in 1984, the price was just under $4,000, but now it seems like almost everybody has one in their pocket.
What was once a rich man's toy is now one of the most popular machines on the planet, with some estimating there are nearly 6.8 billion active cellphones worldwide.
As technology has evolved, phones have gotten smaller and more powerful, finding their way into almost every aspect of our lives.
"I think society revolves around it right now,” said Larry Luke. “Ninety-nine percent of the people feel like they’re lost if they’re not carrying it or texting on it."
"My first cell phone was one of the great big ones,” said Jann Schroeder. “At that point I struggled to make a phone call on it, and now it's pretty much automatic."
But as many apps and features as modern phones have, in Minnesota, most people agree they have one use above all others.
"I think it's vitally important to have communication at-hand,” said Timothy Stadig. “Especially if you're in dire need, or in a situation where you're stuck on the road."
"I’ll tell me you what, if you get stuck in the ditch, during our winter weather, that would be bad,” said Sue Kern.
"Nobody would be able to find me,” said Robbie Julson. “Nobody would be able to get me out of the ditch."
