(ABC 6 News) -- Officials in Austin will consider closing one of the city's streets for the sake of protecting students.
Monday the Austin City Council set a public hearing on a proposal to close a block of 3rd Avenue Northwest between 4th and 5th Street.
The street runs between Pacelli High School and Elementary School. School leaders say it's a safety issue with kids moving between the two schools frequently.
The school says it would create a safer, campus-type environment, but councilors say it will come down to cost, and how much the change would disrupt traffic.
"Right now i think it's certainly an idea worth considering, and they've made a pretty strong statement for what they want to do and why they want to do it," Janet Anderson, council member-at-large, said.
A public hearing on the project is set for April 7th.
