MN Legislature May Consider Rescinding Adoption Tax

(ABC 6 News) - An update now to an ABC 6 News investigation we first brought you back in November.

When we first introduced you to Aaron and Kristy Norman, they were frustrated over an unexpected $800 they would have to pay as part of the adoption of their daughter Haddie. The extra $800 is the result of last year's tax package, where lawmakers made employer adoption reimbursements taxable. Up until that point, those reimbursements were not taxable.

This year, there is new legislation being introduced to exempt that money.
"It's been really exciting to see just the support and the momentum, even here at the state level", says Aaron Normal. "Just to see the number of legislators that were really in support of this. It was really encouraging to us."

The bill got a hearing on the first day of the session and the Normals were there to testify. Rochester Democrat Kim Norton is supporting that legislation.
