(ABC 6 News) - It's a sweet treat like you've never seen.
Look at this. This is a cake, designed as a tree shaped fairy house. The cake was created by Austin Hy-Vee baker Dawn Stern. The tree cake took the gold medal last weekend at the Upper Midwest Bakers Association cake decorating competition. There were 74 cakes in this years contest.
Dawn's cake was given a score of 73. A perfect score is 75.
"It takes a lot of supports (laugh), and it can't just be all cake," says baker Dawn Stern, "You have to use some Rice Krispies Treats and stuff."
Yes, those are lights inside the tree. Dawn estimates her cake is valued at $4,000. That represents the amount of merchandise they Hy-Vee bakery would sell over the 50 hours it took her to make the cake. By the way, she created her award winning confection at home, after work.
The 4 foot tall cake is expected to be on display at the Austin Hy-Vee store for a couple of weeks.
