DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Gov. Terry Branstad is pushing back against proposed cuts to the federal defense budget.

Branstad says Tuesday that he is seeking to deliver a letter to President Barack Obama signed by every governor expressing displeasure with the proposed budget. Branstad has just returned from Washington where he attended a meeting of the National Governor's Association.

Branstad co-chairs the Association's council advising the Pentagon and Homeland Security. He says he is particularly concerned about cuts to the National Guard, which he says could be dangerous for national defense, as well as for states that rely on those forces in emergencies.

Col. Greg Hapgood, a spokesman for the Iowa National Guard, says it is not yet clear how the proposed cuts could impact the Iowa National Guard.
