(ABC 6 News) -- A federal judge ruled the time for legislative action on Minnesota's sex offender program is now. It's a story ABC 6 has been investigating for months.

The judge is refusing to throw out a lawsuit challenging the state's treatment of sex offenders.  He says the program is clearly broken, even suggesting ruling the program unconstitutional and scrapping it completely.

As we have reported, a group of offenders filed a lawsuit, saying they're committed indefinitely.  We spoke with a level 3 sex offender currently in the program who says those inside are losing hope.

"People have been here a long time, some 2-3 years like me, some 10-15 years, and there's just no light at the end of the tunnel," Jeff said.

State lawmakers are considering proposals this legislative session for an alternate system.
