(KSTP) - The University of Minnesota Board of Regents will ask the legislature to allow beer and wine sales at TCF Bank Stadium after a two-year trial period ends in July.  A report presented to the board on Friday indicates alcohol sales have not increased problem in the stadium or in surrounding neighborhoods.

"During the years where we actually permitted alcohol sales we have seen no meaninful increase in any alcohol-related incidents at TCF stadium for Gopher football games," U of M Vice President Pam Wheelock told the board.

In fact, a study shows the number of incidents dropped from 77 alcohol-related incidents in 2010, before beer and wine sales, to 59 in 2013.

The Minnesota Legislature will need to give final approval to continue the sales.  That approval is expected to happen during the next legislative session.

In a related note, the U of M reports it is now turning a profit on beer and wine sales.  More than $181,000 in profits from 2013 will go toward the school's athletics programs.
