(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be modifying the proposed design of the intersection at Steele County Road 43, which is part of the Hwy 14 expansion project near Owatonna.
Originally, a reduced conflict intersection had been recommended for Hwy 14 and Steele County Road 43. Instead, an open at-grade intersection with turn lane improvements will be used when the roadway is expanded from two lanes to four lanes. MnDOT says the intersection will allow direct north and south travel for County Road 43 traffic across Hwy 14.
MnDOT says the change addresses safety concerns from community members and public officials and will benefit motorists and members of the agricultural community, who drive large equipment through the region.
Safety is the focus of the $16.5 million project. The 2.5-mile extension is scheduled for construction in late summer 2014 east of Owatonna and expected to be completed in fall 2015.
