IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A University of Iowa center says it has been awarded grant money to conduct a national survey and educational campaign to improve vehicle safety.

The UI Public Policy Center said Monday it has received three grants totaling $17.2 million from a program established by a class-action settlement involving Toyota.

The center says the survey will ask drivers nationwide about their knowledge and use of safety technologies and understanding of defensive driving techniques. The results will be developed into a national campaign designed to help drivers better understand and use vehicle safety systems.

The National Safety Council and Iowa City-based Digital Artefacts will be involved in the campaign, designed to reach 90 percent of U.S. adults multiple times.

The center will also use the grants to conduct other auto safety research.
